Nicole McMahon, Ph.D.
Welcome to my website! I am a Postdoctoral Fellow for the Canadian Municipal Barometer in the Department of Political Science at The University of Calgary (Calgary, AB, Canada). I completed my Ph.D. in Political Science at The University of Western Ontario (London, ON, Canada).
I am broadly interested in the areas of LGBTQ+ politics, Canadian politics, and comparative public policy. My research is forthcoming or published in Governance, Party Politics, Politics, Groups and Identities, Representation, PS: Political Science & Politics, and the Canadian Journal of Political Science.
My new project, "Gender Identity on the Ballot: Explaining the Electoral Politics of Gender Diversity," is supported by a SSHRC Insight Development Grant. In this project, I seek to develop new empirical insight into the experiences of transgender and gender variant political candidates, the strategic choices made during political campaigns, and the effects of transgender candidates on public policy and public opinion.
I have experience as an instructor in topics related to LGBTQ+ politics and Gender & Politics and as a teaching assistant in Canadian politics and research methodology at the University of Western Ontario. I also have experience as a teaching assistant at the ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research.
